One person has died following a clash between two groups in Nawala, police said.
NewsFirst reported that the incident took place at a restaurant on Friday night. The victim was injured in the clash and admitted to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
The dead man was a 27-year-old resident of Rajagiriya, according to Newswire, which reported that he was assaulted after a dispute involving a group of people escalated. His body has been placed in the Kalubowila Hospital mortuary.
The two accounts differ slightly in framing — NewsFirst described a clash between two groups at a restaurant, while Newswire reported an assault following an escalating dispute. Neither report identified the victim, named any suspect, or set out what the dispute was about.
Nawala falls within the Welikada Police Division, and Welikada Police are conducting further investigations. The suburb sits on the eastern edge of Colombo, adjoining Rajagiriya and Narahenpita.
No arrests had been made in connection with the incident at the time of reporting. Police have not said how many people were involved in the confrontation, or whether any weapon was used.
