Two men have been killed in separate road accidents involving motorcycles, police said.
The first crash happened at Ambalanwatta in Galle, where a motorcycle collided with a bicycle. Both riders were injured and admitted to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. The cyclist, a 65-year-old resident of Ambalanwatta, later died while receiving treatment, Ada Derana reported. The motorcyclist’s condition was not given.
In the second accident, a motorcyclist was killed at Thambagalla in the Madampe area after his motorcycle collided with a lorry. Police said the dead man was a 25-year-old resident of Weerakodiyana.
Investigations into both accidents are continuing. Police did not say at what time either crash occurred, and the names of the dead were not released.
Motorcycles dominate the casualty figures
The two deaths follow a pattern police have set out repeatedly this year. Officers said this month that 1,693 people had been killed on Sri Lanka’s roads so far in 2026, with motorcyclists and pedestrians together accounting for about two-thirds of the toll even as the overall number of accidents fell.
Motorcycles now make up more than half the national fleet. Deputy Inspector General W.P.J. Senadheera, who heads the Traffic Control and Road Safety Range, said more than 5.2 million of the country’s 9.2 million registered vehicles are motorcycles, with a further 70,000 electric two-wheelers on the roads.
The same pattern of unrelated same-day fatalities appeared earlier this month, when two motorcyclists were killed in separate crashes at Dambulla and Udugama.
