The organised crime suspect known as “Bus Lalith” was brought into Sri Lanka on Tuesday morning, ending a repatriation effort that ran for months after his arrest in Dubai.

Lalith Kannangara was escorted back by a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said. Ada Derana, the Daily Mirror and Hiru News all reported the arrival on Tuesday, and police said the CID has opened further investigations now that he is in the country.

He is wanted over multiple allegations including murder, extortion and other criminal activity.

Update: handed to the CCIB, and how the Dubai arrest was made

Kannangara was taken to the Central Crime Investigation Bureau under tight security later on Tuesday morning for further investigation, after CID officers recorded his statements, Ada Derana reported in an update. Hiru News also reported the handover. Ada Derana additionally described him as a drug trafficker, a characterisation absent from Tuesday’s earlier reports.

Ada Derana put the arrival more precisely than any outlet had managed earlier: he landed at Bandaranaike International Airport at around 5.20 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226 from Dubai.

NewsFirst, filing separately, set out how the operation was run and why it took so long. The repatriation was carried out on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police by a combined team drawn from the CCIB, the State Intelligence Service and the CID. Kannangara was traced after officers questioned a close associate held in Sri Lanka, and Sri Lankan officers who travelled to the United Arab Emirates arrested him at a Dubai apartment complex. He then contested his removal in the Dubai courts, which recently ruled that he be deported — the ruling that finally cleared his return.

The reports still do not agree on when he was caught. NewsFirst says the Dubai arrest was made in November last year; Hiru News, as noted below, says October. Neither outlet addresses the other’s date.

NewsFirst also reported that four more alleged organised crime figures have been arrested in Dubai, among them Ranjith Kumara Dissanayake, known as “Konda Ranji”, and that steps are under way to bring all four back to Sri Lanka. None of Tuesday’s reports says whether “Wanathe Chathu” — the second suspect NewsFirst earlier said would be deported alongside Kannangara — is among them.

The warrants waiting for him

Ada Derana set out the court orders outstanding against Kannangara, detail the other two outlets did not carry.

An Interpol Red Notice was obtained through the Western Province South Crime Division in connection with a case before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court. The Colombo High Court has issued an open warrant over his failure to appear in a murder case.

The Avissawella Magistrate’s Court has issued two further open warrants. One relates to an incident on 20 September 2021, when he allegedly went to a house in Neluntuduwa and attempted to shoot the occupant. The other concerns 16 October 2022, when three people were allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon.

The arrival slipped past both predicted dates

The repatriation was announced on 22 August, when NewsFirst and the Daily Mirror gave conflicting arrival days — NewsFirst named 24 August, the Daily Mirror 23 August. Neither held. He landed on the morning of the 25th.

The reports also differ on how long he had been held. Hiru News, filing in Sinhala, says Dubai police arrested him in October last year acting on information supplied by Sri Lankan investigators, and that a CID team travelled to Dubai to collect him. Ada Derana describes him only as “recently arrested”. Hiru’s account matches the evidence set out in our earlier report, which placed the arrest in October 2025 — meaning roughly ten months passed between his detention and his return, a period during which he contested the move before a Dubai court and lost.

A discrepancy in his age is unresolved. Ada Derana gives it as 36 and describes him as a resident of Kalutara South; the Daily Mirror’s report on 22 August gave his age as 24. Neither outlet has corrected the other.

None of Tuesday’s three reports mentions “Wanathe Chathu”, the second suspect NewsFirst said would be deported alongside him. Whether he was on the same flight has not been reported.

Update: the full charge sheet, and the age question settled

The Daily Mirror published a detailed account of the charges later on Tuesday that goes well beyond the warrants Ada Derana listed. It also settles the age discrepancy noted above: the paper now describes Kannangara as 36 and a resident of Kalutara South, matching Ada Derana and superseding its own figure of 24 from 22 August. It says he was escorted in by a team led by the Director of the Central Crime Investigation Bureau.

The offences police link him to run from 2013 to 2025 and cluster in the Hanwella, Meegoda, Padukka and Kosgama police areas. The earliest is an assault causing injury with a sharp weapon in Hanwella in September 2013. In 2021 he is accused of breaking into business premises in Neluwathuduwa and setting a lorry alight, and separately of opening fire near a businessman’s home after extortion demands were refused, seriously injuring the victim. In October 2022 a group allegedly forced entry to a house in Hanwella and seriously injured three people.

Police accuse him of aiding, abetting and conspiring in a fatal shooting on Cross Street, Hanwella, on 18 December 2022 — a case now before the Homagama/Awissawella Magistrate’s Court. Their records also tie him to a double shooting murder in the Padukka area on 25 December 2023, a fatal shooting in Hanwella on 4 March 2024, and the murder of a businessman in Neluwathuduwa on 30 September 2024.

More recent allegations include opening fire on three people in a three-wheeler in Kosgama in 2025, and supplying a T-56 assault rifle and 25 rounds to a man arrested near a Kollupitiya nightclub in July 2025. Police further allege he directed the fatal shooting of a former Pradeshiya Sabha member riding a motorcycle in Meegoda on 12 August 2025, with a firearm discharged into the air on Muthuhena Road in the same area the following day.

The Daily Mirror renders the location as “Neluwathuduwa” where Ada Derana wrote “Neluntuduwa”; both refer to the same 2021 shooting.

One date narrows the outstanding question of when he was caught. Both the Daily Mirror and Ada Derana report that the operation followed special intelligence received by the Inspector General of Police on 25 October 2025. The Dubai arrest must therefore have come on or after that date, which is consistent with Hiru’s October and NewsFirst’s November but rules out anything earlier. Neither outlet gives the arrest date itself.

Police said inquiries will also cover his alleged drug trafficking and other organised criminal activity, and that the Illegal Assets Investigation Division has opened a separate investigation into property he is suspected of acquiring illegally. At the same briefing police disclosed the scale of their wider asset programme — Rs. 3,878 million targeted over three years, with 109 more Red Notice suspects sought.

Update: 72-hour detention order issued, firecrackers in the streets

A 72-hour detention order has been issued against Kannangara to allow further questioning about his alleged organised criminal activity, Ada Derana and Hiru News reported on Tuesday afternoon. Hiru attributed the order to the Police Media Spokesman.

NewsFirst reported that residents in several areas lit firecrackers to mark his return, expressing support for the operation. It is a public reaction police rarely draw, and no outlet reported where the celebrations took place.

Filing on the CCIB handover, NewsFirst repeated that the Dubai arrest was made in November last year — leaving its disagreement with Hiru’s October unresolved, and neither outlet acknowledging the other. It also refined the position on the four other suspects: rather than describing them as newly arrested, it said Ranjith Kumara Dissanayake, alias “Konda Ranji”, and three others remain in custody in Dubai, with efforts under way to bring them back. ASP Wootler described the repatriation as the outcome of a carefully planned operation spanning several months.

Hiru’s account of who travelled to Dubai differs from Ada Derana’s. Hiru says a team from the Central Crime Investigation Bureau went to collect him; Ada Derana credited the CID. NewsFirst’s version reconciles the two, describing a combined CCIB, SIS and CID team.

Update, August 26: firearms hunt launched on his own confessions

Police have opened a special operation to recover firearms belonging to Kannangara, NewsFirst reported on Wednesday evening. The search is being run on information he gave under questioning during the 72-hour detention order issued on Tuesday.

Two claims from those confessions were disclosed. Police said Kannangara extorted protection money from business owners in areas including Hanwella — and that the targets extended to small traders, not only the larger businessmen named in the charge sheet. They also said that, while trafficking drugs, he defrauded other drug traffickers of hundreds of millions of rupees.

Both disclosures extend patterns already on the record rather than opening new ones. The offences police listed on Tuesday cluster in Hanwella, Meegoda, Padukka and Kosgama, and include an allegation that he opened fire near a businessman’s home after extortion demands were refused. The firearms search follows directly from the charge sheet’s weapons allegations, among them the supply of a T-56 assault rifle and 25 rounds to a man arrested near a Kollupitiya nightclub in July 2025.

Further investigation is being directed by the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau, the unit he was handed to on Tuesday morning.

No other verified Sri Lankan newsroom had reported the firearms operation as of Wednesday evening; Ada Derana’s latest-news listing carried no filing on it. The detention order runs 72 hours from Tuesday afternoon, so it expires around Friday, at which point police must produce him in court or seek an extension.
