One person was killed and another injured when a car collided with the intercity train running from Colombo Fort to Kankesanthurai in the Araviyan Nagar area of Kilinochchi on Wednesday morning.
The Railway Department said the crash happened at around 11.30 a.m. at a level crossing fitted with warning signal lights that were functioning at the time.
The train sustained damage in the collision, and the department said steps had been taken to hold it at Kilinochchi railway station for the time being. NewsFirst did not report how long services on the northern line were disrupted or whether a replacement service was arranged.

The report did not identify the person killed or the injured passenger, give the number of people in the car, or say whether police have opened an investigation. It also did not state whether the crossing was gated or protected by lights alone — a distinction that matters, because Sri Lanka’s rail network includes a large number of crossings where signals operate without physical barriers.
The department’s confirmation that the warning lights were working shifts attention to how the vehicle came to be on the crossing. No account from the train driver or from witnesses has been reported.
A recurring hazard
Level crossings remain one of the most persistent sources of fatalities on Sri Lanka’s railways. The northern line through Kilinochchi carries the Colombo Fort-Kankesanthurai intercity service, restored after the line’s post-war reconstruction, and runs through flat country with numerous road crossings.
A collision between a train and a three-wheeler at Kapuwatta, Kandana in June followed a similar pattern.
Railway management is separately under pressure from trade unions, which this week demanded an investigation into repeated locomotive engine breakdowns. That dispute concerns rolling stock reliability rather than crossing safety.
Update: three children from one family, crossing was ungated
Police accounts published on Thursday identified those in the car and answered the question left open above.
The person killed was a 17-year-old girl from Selvanagar, who died at the scene, Ada Derana reported. A nine-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy travelling in the same car were injured and admitted to Kilinochchi Hospital. Police said all three were siblings from the same family.
Their father was driving the car and their mother was also in the vehicle. Neither was injured.
The figure of one injured in the initial report was therefore an undercount: five people were in the car, three of them children, and two of the children were hurt.
Ada Derana also settled the crossing question. The Ariviyal Nagar crossing is ungated — signal lights without physical barriers, the configuration that accounts for a large share of Sri Lanka’s level-crossing deaths.
The two reports differ on the service involved. NewsFirst described it as the Colombo Fort-Kankesanthurai intercity train; Ada Derana describes a train travelling from Mount Lavinia to Kankesanthurai. Both place it northbound on the same line at the same crossing.
The regional outlet Jaffna Monitor, which is not among the newsrooms this desk counts as verified, reported that the crossing sits on the access road to the University of Jaffna’s Kilinochchi campus and that residents disputed the Railway Department’s statement that the warning lights were working, saying the system had not been functioning properly. No verified newsroom has yet tested that claim, and the Railway Department has not responded to it.
