Four people were injured on Saturday when a private bus veered off the road and overturned in the Rambukpitiya area of Nawalapitiya.
The bus was travelling from Wellawaya to Nawalapitiya at the time, NewsFirst reported. Police said the injured were admitted to Nawalapitiya District General Hospital.
No deaths were reported. NewsFirst did not give the time of the accident, the number of passengers on board, the condition of those hurt, or whether the driver has been arrested.
A recurring stretch
The Wellawaya-Nawalapitiya service runs from the Uva lowlands up through the central hills, a route of tight gradients and bends. Nawalapitiya has seen a series of road fatalities and injuries this year, including a fatal container truck collision in May, a school van that went over a precipice, injuring 13, and three people killed when a tree fell on a three-wheeler in June.
The National Council for Road Safety announced in July that all passenger buses would face mandatory roadworthiness inspections every 5,000 kilometres, citing vehicle defects and driver negligence as leading causes of accidents in public transport. Police have not indicated a cause in this case, and an investigation is under way.
