Update (Tuesday): the victim has been named, police have identified the faction they suspect, and the suspected getaway motorcycle has been found burnt out. Jump to the update.

A 28-year-old man shot in Payagala, Kalutara, on Monday evening died at Nagoda Hospital later that night, police said.

The man was admitted with serious injuries after the shooting and succumbed to them at about 10.58 p.m., Ada Derana reported in an update to its earlier account. Police said investigations are under way into the circumstances of the shooting and the identity of those responsible.

Police suspect a gang dispute

Hiru News reported that police suspect the shooting was the result of a dispute between two underworld gangs. That is the only motive reported by any outlet, and Ada Derana’s account does not mention it.

Neither outlet named the victim, said whether he was known to police, or reported how many shots were fired or how many attackers were involved. No arrests have been reported.

The two accounts place it differently

The outlets give different locations within Payagala. Ada Derana said the shooting took place in front of a house in Naimulla. Hiru, in its first report and again in its follow-up, placed it in the Koshena area.

Both agree on the victim’s age, the Kalutara district, and that he was taken to Nagoda Hospital, so the reports describe the same incident. Neither outlet corrected the other, and LankaNewz has not established which locality is correct.

Context

Payagala has appeared in reporting several times this year, though in unrelated cases. Police arrested associates of a drug suspect there in an earlier operation, and a gunman was detained at Wettumakada in the same police division in June. Neither is connected to Monday’s shooting on the reporting available.

Police have not said whether the victim was targeted, nor released any description of the assailants. No outlet reported whether a magistrate’s inquest has been scheduled or a post-mortem ordered.

Update: the victim is named

The dead man was known as “Dila” and was a resident of the area, Hiru News reported on Tuesday. He is reported to be a brother-in-law of an alleged organised crime gang member known as “Panadura Nilanga”.

That answers three of the questions left open above. Hiru also reported that he was shot by two unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle, and attributed the account to the Police Media Division.

Police name the suspected faction

Police believe the attack arose from an ongoing conflict between rival organised crime groups, and specifically suspect the faction of an alleged gang member named as Salindu Malshitha, alias “Kudu Salindu”, Hiru reported.

That name has appeared in Payagala reporting before. Police arrested associates of the same suspect in the area in an earlier, separate operation. No outlet has linked that operation to Monday’s shooting, and the connection here is only that the same alias recurs in police accounts of the locality.

No arrests have been reported over the shooting.

The age has changed

Hiru’s Tuesday report gives the victim’s age as 30. Ada Derana and Hiru’s own Monday reports both said 28. Neither outlet noted the change or issued a correction, and LankaNewz has not established which figure is correct.

Hiru again placed the shooting in the Koshena area, consistent with its earlier filings and, at this point in the reporting, still at odds with Ada Derana’s Naimulla. Ada Derana filed again later on Tuesday — see the update below.

Update: the getaway motorcycle is found burnt out

A motorcycle suspected of having been used in the shooting was found burning in a rubber estate in the Eladuwa area, within the Dodangoda police division, on Tuesday morning, Ada Derana reported, citing Dodangoda Police.

That is consistent with Hiru’s account of two gunmen escaping on a motorcycle, and the burning is the standard method for destroying forensic traces after a contract shooting. Eladuwa lies inland from the coastal strip where the shooting took place.

Ada Derana did not say who found the motorcycle, whether it has been identified or traced to an owner, whether anything was recovered from it, or whether the fire was still burning when police arrived. No arrests have been reported.

Ada Derana has moved to Hiru’s location

Ada Derana’s Tuesday report places the shooting in the Koshena area of Payagala — the locality Hiru has used since its first filing. Ada Derana’s Monday report had said Naimulla.

The outlet did not note the change or publish a correction, and its Tuesday account keeps a trace of the earlier version, describing the victim as the man shot “in front of a house in the Payagala area last night.” The location split flagged above therefore appears to have resolved in Hiru’s favour, by Ada Derana quietly switching rather than by either outlet addressing it.

Ada Derana also now carries the victim’s identification as “Dila,” the brother-in-law of the alleged gang member known as “Panadura Nilanga,” matching Hiru’s Tuesday report. It gives no age, so the 28-versus-30 discrepancy noted above remains unresolved.

NewsFirst says the motorcycle was abandoned, not burning

NewsFirst reported the recovery differently. It said police found the motorcycle abandoned in the Aladuwatta area of Dodangoda, several hours after the shooting, and made no mention of a fire.

Ada Derana said the machine was found burning in a rubber estate in the Eladuwa area of the same police division. Both place it in Dodangoda; they differ on the locality name and on whether it was alight when found. The archive offers no independent precedent for either spelling, so LankaNewz has attributed each to the outlet that published it rather than choosing between them.

The distinction is not cosmetic. A burnt-out machine points to deliberate destruction of forensic traces; one simply abandoned may still yield evidence. Neither outlet said whether anything was recovered from it or whether it has been traced to an owner.

NewsFirst supports the age of 30, and gives a different relationship

NewsFirst described the victim as a 30-year-old resident of Payagala, matching Hiru’s Tuesday figure against the 28 given by Ada Derana and by Hiru’s own Monday reports. Two of the three Tuesday accounts now say 30.

On the relationship to “Panadura Nilanga”, NewsFirst said the deceased was believed to have been an associate of the alleged organised crime figure. Hiru, and later Ada Derana, called him a brother-in-law. Those are not contradictory — a relative may also be an associate — but the family connection is reported by two outlets and the looser one by NewsFirst alone.

A second motive is now on the record

NewsFirst said investigators suspect the shooting may have been linked to a dispute connected to narcotics activities, while stressing inquiries are continuing to establish the motive.

Hiru had attributed it to a conflict between rival organised crime groups and named the suspected faction as that of “Kudu Salindu”. The two accounts overlap rather than compete — the alias Hiru names is itself a narcotics one — but no outlet has stated the motive as established.

NewsFirst also reported that the two gunmen opened fire using an automatic weapon, a detail neither Ada Derana nor Hiru carried. No arrests have been reported.
