The Colombo Crimes Division has arrested a suspect at Sedawatta in Wellampitiya who was in possession of around 8 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as Ice, and 4 kilogrammes of heroin.
Ada Derana reported the arrest on Wednesday evening. The report did not name the suspect, give an age or address, state when the raid took place, or put a street value on the haul. Police have not said whether the suspect is linked to a wider trafficking network.

A 12-kilogramme combined seizure is substantial by the standards of routine street-level narcotics policing. It is an order of magnitude larger than the roadblock arrest at Ahungalla on Monday, where police seized 1.19kg of Ice, 217g of heroin and 101g of kush from a motorcyclist.
It remains far smaller than the container consignment intercepted at the Colombo Port last month, in which five suspects were placed under detention orders over a haul reported at between 463kg and 472kg. Outlets remain split on that consignment’s value, quoting figures of both Rs. 8 billion and Rs. 15 billion.
No verified newsroom other than Ada Derana had reported the Sedawatta arrest at the time of writing.
Update, September 3: police follow the money, and name the network
The Colombo Crime Division has deployed two separate investigative teams to pursue the case, and believes the man arrested is an associate of the organised crime figure known as “Sedawatte Kasun”, NewsFirst reported.
Sedawatte Kasun is believed to be living in Dubai, police said.
The inquiries are focused on people who allegedly received money from the suspect, together with further intelligence linked to the seized narcotics — a financial investigation running alongside the drugs case rather than a simple possession charge.
The seizure, in more detail
NewsFirst fills in most of what Ada Derana left out. The suspect is 38 years old and was arrested on Wednesday (2) during a special operation by the Colombo Crime Division. The narcotics were recovered in a search of his home: 4kg of heroin, 8kg of Ice and Rs. 300,000 in cash.
The drug quantities match Ada Derana’s figures exactly. The cash is new, and matters — it is the evidential basis for the money-trail inquiry.
He was due before the Hultsdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where investigators were to seek detention orders for further questioning.
Where this fits
The Dubai connection places the case in a pattern that has run through Sri Lankan organised-crime reporting for months, in which figures directing local networks are located in the Gulf. “Kalu Malli” was arrested in Dubai on an Interpol notice on September 1.

Update, September 4: the detention order is granted
The Hultsdorp Magistrate’s Court granted a three-day detention order over the suspect, NewsFirst reported on Friday morning, answering the question left open above.
The suspect was produced before the court on Thursday (3), and the order was obtained following that appearance. The Colombo Crime Division said it will move to seek an extension of the detention order in the coming days as investigations continue.
Every other figure in this report matches what was already published: 4kg of heroin, 8kg of Ice and Rs. 300,000 in cash, recovered from the suspect’s house during an operation the previous day, and Sedawatte Kasun himself living in Dubai.
The suspect is still not named, and the report gives no date for the extension application. NewsFirst spells the locality “Sedawatte”; this article follows the archive’s more frequent form, Sedawatta. Both refer to the same place in Wellampitiya.
