A police constable died after a collision between two motorcycles on the Agalawatta–Baduraliya road on Sunday, Hiru News reported, citing police.
The crash happened near culvert 67/2. A motorcycle travelling towards Baduraliya skidded and overturned on the road, then collided with a second motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.
Both riders were severely injured and taken to Pimbura Hospital, where the constable died of his injuries.
The dead man was 41 years old, a resident of Pelandha, and attached to the Matugama Police Station. Agalawatta Police are investigating.
What the account leaves open
Hiru’s report does not say which of the two riders was the constable — the one who skidded, or the rider he collided with — nor whether the second rider remains in hospital. It gives no time of day for the crash, does not say whether either man was on duty, and offers no cause.
No authority has attributed the crash to road conditions. It is worth recording, without drawing a causal link that police have not drawn, that the collision occurred during the heaviest rainfall of the current spell: the Kalutara district, which contains Agalawatta, Baduraliya and Matugama, is under a Level 3 Red landslide warning at Walallawita, and more than 100 mm of rain was forecast for the Western Province across the weekend.
A second death in the same division
Agalawatta Police reported a separate fatality on the same day. A 15-year-old schoolboy, Hasitha Pradeep Kumara of Delpe, was killed by lightning while sleeping on the floor of his home during heavy rain, and was taken to the same Pimbura hospital.
The two deaths are unconnected events, but they fall on the same day, in the same police division, and were received at the same hospital. Neither outlet reporting them mentions the other.
