Two men suspected of underworld ties opened fire on police officers in Kosgoda on Saturday and were arrested after officers returned fire, police said. One person was wounded and taken to hospital.
The officers belonged to the Walana unit based in the Kalutara district. Police stopped the two men to check them, and according to Hiru News the pair were on their way to carry out a murder when they were intercepted. The men fired on the officers; the officers fired back.
Both suspects were taken into custody, and two firearms were recovered.
The Daily Mirror places the incident in the Maha Induruwa area of Kosgoda, and reports that the injured person was admitted to hospital for treatment. Investigations are continuing.
A naming difference, and what the two accounts leave open
The outlets render the unit’s name differently — the Daily Mirror calls it the Walana Anti-Vice Squad, Hiru the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit. Both are translations of the same Sinhala designation for a vice-suppression strike unit, and the sign on the unit’s own building, visible in Hiru’s photograph of it, carries that wording. It is one unit, not two.
Neither account identifies the wounded person — whether a suspect, an officer or a bystander — or describes the condition of the injury. Neither names the suspects, gives their ages, says who the intended target of the alleged murder plot was, or explains how police knew the pair were en route to carry it out. No charges have been described beyond the arrests, and none of the allegations has been tested in court.
A coastal strip under pressure
The stretch of southern coast running from Ahungalla through Kosgoda to Balapitiya has produced a steady run of shooting incidents this year. In September, a gunman’s pistol misfired twice during an attempt on a relative of the late crime figure “Kosgoda Tharaka” in the same area. On 1 October, a brother of the drug suspect known as “Loku Patty” was shot dead at Ahungalla, and in late September a fatal shooting at Halpathota, Baddegama was linked to the same network of disputes.
What distinguishes Saturday’s incident is that police were the ones fired upon, and that the intervention was described as pre-emptive rather than a response to a killing already carried out.
Update, 4 October: police describe an intelligence-led raid, and name the feud behind it
Police say the operation was not a routine check but a raid mounted on specific intelligence. The raid was carried out on information that a group linked to the organised crime figure known as “Podi Patty” was organising a shooting, NewsFirst reported on Sunday, citing police.
Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler, said a suspect was injured in return fire by the police, and that the injured man and a second suspect were then arrested. A pistol and a revolver were seized from them.
That answers three of the questions this article left open:
- Who was wounded. The injured person was a suspect, not an officer or a bystander.
- What the weapons were. The “two firearms” of Saturday’s reporting were a pistol and a revolver.
- How police knew. The pair were not stopped at random. Police were acting on intelligence about a planned shooting, which is why the officers were in a position to intercept them — and why Hiru’s description of a check that escalated understates the operation.
The two locality names appear to describe two different places
NewsFirst places the raid at Akavigoda, Kosgoda; Newswire’s account renders the same locality as Akadigoda. Both say the shooting the suspects were allegedly preparing to carry out was to take place in the Maha Induruwa area — which is where the Daily Mirror placed the incident itself.
On that reading the apparent conflict noted above is not a conflict at all: Akavigoda/Akadigoda is where the raid happened, and Maha Induruwa is where the planned attack was to happen. LankaNewz notes this as the reading the two later accounts support, not as a correction any outlet has published.
The feud police are pointing at is one this site has already reported
Investigators suspect the planned attack was tied to an ongoing dispute between groups associated with “Loku Patty” and “Karandeniya Sudda”, Newswire reported. Police believe the arrested men were linked to Loku Patty’s group and were planning to target someone associated with Karandeniya Sudda’s group.
That places Saturday’s raid inside the feud this site reported a week earlier. Police said the 27 September killing of three people at Halpathota, Baddegama was carried out by followers of Sobana Handi Jayalath de Silva, alias “Karandeniye Sudda”, a foreign-based crime figure, and one of those killed was connected to a faction linked to “Loku Patty”.
Police further suspect the shooting being planned may have been intended as retaliation for the killing of Loku Patty’s brother, known as “Podi Patty”, shot dead at Welikanda, Ahungalla on 1 October. On that account the sequence runs in both directions: an attack attributed to Karandeniya Sudda’s side on 27 September, a killing on 1 October, and a counter-attack intercepted on 3 October.
Newswire’s filing also independently states that the man shot dead on 1 October was the brother known as “Podi Patty” — an identification our coverage of that killing had been able to attribute only to Hiru News.
A hand grenade, a third suspect, and four intended targets
Two further police accounts filed later on Sunday change the shape of the incident in three ways.
A third suspect fled. Police searched the house and arrested one man there; the man who had opened fire was wounded and hospitalised. A third suspect escaped the scene and remains at large, Newswire reported. Efforts to trace him are part of the continuing investigation. Saturday’s reporting described only the two men taken into custody.
The haul was larger than two firearms. A search of the house recovered:
- a 9mm pistol with a magazine holding eight rounds
- a revolver with six rounds
- a second 9mm magazine with six rounds
- a foreign-made hand grenade
Police also seized a motorcycle fitted with false number plates, which investigators believe had been prepared for use in a crime, and a three-wheeler. The grenade and the false-plated motorcycle are both new to the account, and the motorcycle in particular supports the police description of an attack in preparation rather than one merely discussed.
The alleged plot had four intended victims. Police say the group at the house was preparing to kill four people — the first number any account has attached to the plan.
What the later filings settle, and what they do not
The wounded man was taken to Balapitiya Hospital. The two men in custody are aged 32 and 33 and are residents of the Maha Induruwa area — which is also where the planned shooting was to take place, according to the earlier accounts.
The raid is placed at a house in Akadegoda, Kosgoda, mounted on information that the suspects were staying there. Newswire’s second filing renders the unit as the Walana Anti-Corruption and Strike Force, a fourth English rendering of the same Sinhala designation discussed above.
The suspect in custody and the seized items have been handed to Kosgoda Police, which is investigating jointly with the Walana unit.
Still not reported
No outlet names the arrested men, describes the condition of the wounded suspect, or identifies any of the four people the group allegedly intended to kill. None says what charges the men face or whether they have been produced before a court, and none explains how police obtained the intelligence. It is not stated whether the fleeing suspect has been identified. The faction attribution is police suspicion as reported by Newswire; it has not been tested in court, and no outlet carries a response from anyone named.
