Five people were injured when a tipper truck and a bus collided near the Kathaluwa bridge at Ahangama in the Galle district on Monday morning. Police say the tipper struck the oncoming bus while overtaking another vehicle.

The collision was reported by Hiru News at 9.42 a.m. Colombo time. A bus running from Galle towards Colombo and a tipper truck running from Matara towards Galle were the vehicles involved, the outlet’s correspondent reported — meaning the two were travelling in opposite directions on the southern coastal road.

Police said the tipper moved out to overtake another vehicle and hit the bus coming the other way.

Who was hurt

Four passengers travelling in the bus and the driver of the tipper truck were injured and admitted to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Those two figures account exactly for the five reported injured. Notably, the bus driver is not among them — on the filing’s own breakdown, the injuries fell on the bus’s passengers and on the driver of the vehicle that police say caused the collision.

No deaths are reported, and the filing gives no indication of the severity of any of the five injuries.

This is not the Koggala crash

Two serious collisions involving buses have now happened within a few kilometres of each other on consecutive days, and both sent casualties to the same hospital. They are separate events.

Ahangama, Kathaluwa, Habaraduwa and Koggala are neighbouring localities strung along the Galle–Matara coastal road, and Karapitiya Teaching Hospital is the tertiary hospital serving all of them, which is why the two appear similar at a glance. Sunday’s crash — in which a train struck a bus carrying schoolchildren at an ungated crossing — involved a train, a different stretch of road and an entirely different set of casualties.

The photograph

Hiru’s filing carries a photograph of the tipper truck after the collision. It is edge-to-edge watermarked and therefore not reproduced here, but it is worth describing because it corroborates the account.

The vehicle is a Lanka Ashok Leyland tipper with heavy crush damage concentrated on the offside front corner of the cab — the driver’s side in right-hand-drive Sri Lanka. That is the damage pattern an overtaking manoeuvre into oncoming traffic produces, and it is consistent with both the police account of the cause and with the tipper driver being among the injured. The setting is unmistakably coastal: open sea, rock gabions and a beach shack are visible beside the carriageway, matching the Ahangama stretch of the A2. The registration plate has been obscured in the published image.

Not reported

The filing does not give the time of the collision, name the bus operator or say whether it was a private or SLTB service, state how many passengers were aboard, or identify the vehicle the tipper was overtaking or say whether it was involved. No arrest is reported and no police station is named as handling the investigation. There is no word on the condition of the five injured, and no indication whether the coastal road was blocked.

Weather is not mentioned. Rain has been falling across the south-west for several days as the island takes the indirect effects of the Bay of Bengal system, but no filing attributes this collision to road conditions.

Corroboration. Ada Derana filed on the same event under the headline “At least five injured in bus-tipper truck collision in Ahangama”, but the site has returned a CloudFront 403 to this desk for 45 consecutive days, so no publication date could be extracted and it is named here rather than cited. No filing was found from the Daily Mirror, NewsFirst, Island or Daily FT at the time of writing. A search returned several older Sri Lankan crashes with closely similar descriptions — a tipper-and-tractor collision in Monaragala and a pilgrimage tractor struck by a tipper near Kebiliththa, each with five casualties — none of which is this event, and no detail from any of them has been used here.
